Our furry family members can get so much support from the herb Nettle
Nettle can be so good for our furry family members too. It can help support your pets nutritional needs and relieve other health issues. Here are some important reasons to use this herb and easy ways to do it.
1. Nettle is highly nutritious and great for maintaining health
When nettle is taken internally it cleanses and stimulates the blood and helps with many health and skin conditions. Chop up some fresh nettle and sauté in a pan with coconut oil until tender. You can add this to your pets food that day or freeze in an ice cube tray and feed it throughout the week. If you’d rather use the herb in its dried form it can be safely stored and used long term. You can sprinkle the dried nettle into your pets food or you can steep it and make a tea to pour like a gravy. When using it dried I usually use about 1/2 tsp per 1/2 pound of food.
2. Nettle helps with Anemia because of its high iron content
Nettle is very high in iron so it really helps pets with anemia. It can give a boost of energy to a dog or cat that seems lethargic due to chronic fatigue. Nettle balances the liver, glands and nervous system while it nourishes the body.
3. It can be used as an antihistamine for seasonal allergies
Use nettle as a wonderful antihistamine for your pet with seasonal allergies. You can feed it to them in their food cooked, dried or make a mild tea to pour on their food. It can help alleviate itching and other symptoms of allergies.
4. An eyewash made from nettle has anti-inflammatory properties
A nettle tincture can be used as an eye wash. Nettle has anti-inflammatory properties and can help with minor eye infections like conjunctivitis. Add about 10 drops of the tincture to about an ounce of saline water and apply with a cotton ball to the affected eye a few times a day until it seems better.
5. Helps your pets skin and coat stay healthy
Try using a nettle rinse on your pet after its bath or anytime it has skin problems like eczema, hot spots and even fleabites. Boil about 2 cups of water and add 2 tablespoons of dried nettle (using a strainer or filter bag). Let this steep overnight, cool down and it’s ready to use. If your pet needs a bath do so first and after rinsing work the nettle solution into your pets coat down to the skin. Leave on your pet and let dry naturally or blow dry without rinsing. Note: The rinse will be a dark color and may tint the color of a pet with a very light coat.
